Specs: Vista Home Premium
Windows Media Player open asx files perfectly in XP Pro but not in Vista. This question has been asked and discussed at length in the past and to date I have not seen an answer that works. Does anyone have an answer yet ???

Thanks - I tried renaming it and the name appears to change - but when I go into "details" the name is actually now (name of file.wmv.asx) and it still appears to be an asx file and the error I get when I click on details in the WMP program is that "the file is missing media usage rights". It still will not play - any other ideas ??

OK - thanks, I got the file extension changed and it says it is now a wmv file - unfortunately it still will not play and WMP says the file I am attempting to play does not match the file format and when I ask it to play anyway - it will not. Any other ideas ??

So are you actually having problems streaming media from a particular website or something?

An ASX file is a metafile & not the actual media (ASF) file.

Thank you - yes, it is only a metafile and just a few kbs - so as I understand it then, renaming or converting it will not help. It is in fact a streaming video as I have watched it on the XP Pro operating system just can't get Vista to open it.

I have Vista, as well as, XP & Windows 7 on this machine & I am able to play stream media in WMP 11 via an .asx file. Could you post a link to your streaming media?

In my case, I tried streaming media from this page. Are you able to do the same? Or do you still get an error message?

Thank you Sabertooth - that is very helpful information and I was able to view those sites easily on my Windows XP machine - unfortunately the Vista machine I was working on was not my own - I was just cleaning it up for a friend and trying to get that particular program to open - I had to take it back today - so I am now unable to go any further with the problem. The actual owner has no computer ability whatsoever and asked me to help her open that program. So until I once again need to help her with it - I won't be able to work on it. But I will save this site for future problems with the same situation as I'm sure it will come up again. I intend to bypass Vista entirely and when I get my next computer, it will no doubt be Windows 7 - let's hope this version is better - and thank you for your help.....
