ALT codes no longer work!!!

After a recent update, my accursed ALT codes no longer work. This is REALLY majorly pissing me off, because I write in multiple languages with a standard English keyboard, and the characters I use are "transparent". NOW, the only #$^^&!! way I can write in another language is to buy a #@%^^&%ing Spanish, French, or German keyboard, unless I want to mess with those pain-in-the-keester virtual keyboard layouts, the ones that "change" your keyboard's output...if you memorize the exact positions of the foreign keys. I just want to unlock that %$#@ing ALT key- does anyone know how to do that without my having to reformat my accursed hard drive? I have no idea which update is responsible for this.

Update the keyboard driver first. You might get lucky.

Thank you, but as it turns out, something else was the culprit. Some programs, it seems, pre-empt stuff like that, reserve such input for their exclusive use. I uninstalled several programs I either did not like or no longer needed, and voila! My keyboard is back! Wheeee! I don't know which one was the culprit, but here's a list of what I removed:
Games: Dead Reefs, Nibiru, Keepsake, Tunguska, Mysterious Island. Others: IcoFX, My Screensaver Maker, RealPlayer, Rhapsody....anyhow, it's now a moot point. All is well in the universe.

I also cleaned my registry using RegCleaner (the Eastern European one, not the Microsoft product), picking out the crap that Windows Vista seems incapable of getting rid of all on its own, making sure to even delete file extensions no longer in use.
