February 1, 2016 at 19:18:30
Specs: Vista
With Widows Vista home. Whenever I push power button the blank screen A disk error occurred CTRL+ALT+DEl to restart.

That as far as i can go. I've can use F2 & F12 but i've tried F8 but does not work. I don't know if it has recovery or not.
Any suggestion?

We'll all cross our fingers on the restore disk sorting it.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Did you try > press & hold ALT & F10 to get recovery?

Some ideas here, although I would put a BIOS update on the back burner because if it goes wrong it can brick the motherboard:

It's possible the HDD has failed. Did you get any warnings prior to this problem? Is your HDD listed in the BIOS?

No warning prior to this problem. Do you think maybe my HDD crashed? I tried ALL buttons one at a time, with no help. Kelp getting the same thing. Disk read error occurred.
Thanks for all the help!

Stolen from a website - how to get into BIOS when it fights back:

-=============================================
Its normally F2 for that model...

DO THIS....

One finger on F2 key

With ANOTHER finger press start button

IMMEDIATELY start pressing f2 every SECOND

You can even start pressing F2 ...BEFORE you press start/power button (it will do no harm)

SO like this....

PRESS F2, PRESS POWER BUTTON, WAIT 1 SECOND PRESS F2,WAIT 1 SECOND PRESS F2,WAIT 1 SECOND PRESS F2,WAIT 1 SECOND PRESS F2,

-=============================================

See if you can get there with the above, if so is the HD showing?

I'm still haven't found out what's wrong with the read disk error. Do you think it could be the HDD? I've ordered a restore disk hoping that will fix my problem. Anymore suggesting while i'm waiting on restore disk?

Thanks

Did you manage to get into BIOS?

Worth trying the restore disk but, as per #3, hard disk failure is on the cards.

Yes I used F2 and the HDD was there. I could also use F12 but I never was able to use F8 or F10.

Thanks

"I've ordered a restore disk hoping that will fix my problem"

I hope they didn't charge much. You should have created that disk yourself a long time ago.

I got the following info from another site, it explains how to do a factory recovery:

"Restart your computer & press & hold ALT & F10. This should enter the eRecovery program."

Tried "Restart your computer & press & hold ALT & F10. This should enter the eRecovery program." But it didn't work. All it did was give a hi-pitch beep.

I haven't rec the restore disk should be getting it within the next day or two.

I want to thank you and everyone that has tried to help me figure this out.

Sounds like the recovery partition is corrupted. This adds weight to the idea that the hard disk has failed.

Bit late now but I guess running a Live Linux CD (free) would have helped narrow this down. It just runs between the CD and the RAM.

Hmmm? I may have to invest in a HDD. As old as it is, its cheaper than a new one.
