Your recovery partition is obviously programmed to restore XP on your machine. If you want Vista now you will have to find an installation disk to install. Use the key on the side of the machine.

Terri. Don't have XP on Acer 5514. I'm trying to reload VISTA from partician but can only get into BIOS and if I don't press F2, the machine goes straight into recovery progaramme even though I'm not pressing ALT F10. It then gets stuck on screen which says XP (where did it come from?) but never does anything else and I can only switch off by holding down power button.

That is what I am trying to say. Your recovery partition contains XP recovery data, not VISTA. It is an older machine and was sent from the factory with XP installed and upgraded to Vista later. The recovery partition obviously was never upgraded. If you want to reinstall Vista now the only option is to get a disk from a friend to install it. Use the key found on your machine.

Terrii, thank for taking the rouble to reply but if there is XP on the recovery partician then it's the supplier's/manufacturer's fault but as it's four years old, I doubt I'll getywhere with them. Even so, why won't it install what is on the partition? IE: XP.

... you may have to alter your bios settings some info here

... (did you perhaps select a non-destructive recovery option onto vista?)
