Accidently turned computer off on mains...

Specs: Windows Vista
I'm not very up to speed with everything technical, so I apologise for the long-winded post.

Basically, my partner turned the computer off of the mains as it wasn't restarting. However, when he came to turning it on, the home screen doesn't load; there's just a black screen. We've tried turning it on then off again but nothing has worked. Does anyone have any suggestions?!

Sorry about that, it's vista. No, there's no cursor on the screen at all, it's just black.

If you press the menu button on the monitor do you get a menu?
When booting do you see the bios summary screen?

Does the computer Beep when you turn it on. It may not because not all computers have an internal speaker but if it does it at least tells us if it is getting power. Do you hear any fans spinning when you turn it on?

Also double check the monitor like Wanderer said it could be a bad monitor or the connection may have come lose from the computer.

Unplug the ac power plug and press the power button a few times. Then plug back in the ac plug.

Then press the power button and look for any signs of life. Look for keyboard lights, computer fan's or beeps, any monitor changes.
