Accessing an old hard drive

What is a crash dump from an external hard drive? specifically I removed a hard drive from another computer. I put it into an external hard drive box and wish only to get certain data from the old hard drive. When I plug it into my present computer a blue screen comes up and says hard drive crash dump with a time to occur in seconds. I unplug as I don't know if this will screw up my good computer. What is going on and what do I do?

are you plugging it in before starting the computer?

I turn on the external hard drive after I boot up the computer. It then goes to the blue screen with hard dump count down.
