Solved Can winnt see a DVD-RW as a cd-rw?

April 26, 2012 at 17:39:53
Specs: Windows NT
We have a new computer with Winnt (don't ask !!). It came with a DVD drive. Is there a way to make it think that it's a CD writer? It shows up as a CD-ROM.

Thanks,
Russ

Install burning software, most come with a utility to show capabilities of drive, despite what NT4 shows, after all NT4 is nearly 20 years old.

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

Make sure the burning software you download will work on Windows NT (heaven knows why a new PC comes with Windows NT pre-installed in 2012 - Id say you've been swindled unless it was dirt cheap.

Those that will not work on Windows NT are (list is not complete):

Nero Burning ROM
Roxio Creator
CDBurnerXP

This one will work on Windows NT, and it's free:

My post somehow disappeared, anyhow it doesn't matter, ImgBurn is FREE and will do what the paid ones will do. Runs on Windows 95 and later.

"ImgBurn is FREE and will do what the paid ones will do. Runs on Windows 95 and later."

IMGBurn is essentially a tool for burning CD/DVD images to disc and for creating audio discs. It does not have many of the features you expect to see in normal burning software so is unlikely to fulfil the needs of the OP.

To say it will do what the paid ones will do is misleading and incorrect.
