Solved Wireless utility will not install with Windows ME

April 4, 2013 at 16:51:57
Specs: WINME, PII450/1GIG
I bought a Rosewill brand wireless card for my PII running windows ME. I've installed the card and run the driver installation program. Whenever I run the program, it hangs up and I have to back out of the process. Once I do that, the utility shows up in my programs but when I try to run it, it tells me the aegise2.dll file is missing. I've removed the installed files (can't uninstall because it hasn't completely installed) and run the install again several times. Windows recognizes the card but of course with no drivers, it won't work and it has the dreaded ? Over it. A search for the aegis file reveals that its a part of an aegis.exe file. I've used that as well, rebooted, etc. but nothing has worked. Any ideas what to do next? I've tried the drivers that came with the card AND the drivers from the website, the newest ones. Nothing. Nada.

Assuming this is your card, it says the card is based on the Ralink 2561T chipset. However, if you look at the Ralink drivers site, no Win9x/ME drivers are available for the 256x:

Try the very last one on the list. Just make up a bogus name & email for the download, this will work:

name: bogus man
email: bogus @ bogus.com

Make sure to completely uninstall the other driver 1st. Then run CCleaner-Slim, both the cleaner & the registry scanner. Remove everything they find.

Not a single driver will download. They are all empty download links. Nothing works on that page.

I tried the links myself, they work fine, ALL of them. Click on PCI/mPCI/CB (RT2500), that will take you to the "license agreement" page. Scroll to the bottom, enter the bogus name/email & click SUBMIT.

The file name is: IS_AP_STA_2500_D-3.2.0.10_VA-3.2.0.0_RU-2.1.3.0_VA-2.1.3.0_
AU-2.0.3.0_VA-2.0.3.0_021209_1.0.1.0_Free.EXE
& it's 30.4MB in size.

I tried several times and I tried several different files. Not a one of them worked. I finally entered my real email with a fake name. Its downloading now. I actually tried the site earlier today with the same results. Why it's working for me now I have no idea.

I'll check back in with results.

Ok...nothing. Same thing it was doing before. Installs, hangs up and I have to force quit. It keeps telling me, after I quit, that it is missing the Aegise2.dll file. I've run the cleaner and the registry tool. Nothing.

Probably nothing to do with your problem but are you still running 1Gb RAM?

Did you ever edit the vcache settings in the System.ini file? Are you running the RAM at 100MHz? If not, you should be.

Yes I did. When I upgraded the ram, I kept getting the message about the latency. I got into the bios and made sure it was at 2. The speed was 100mhz but I have the option to make it faster or slower. The bios on this aopen motherboard allows me to over clock the processor too. Lots of stuff I can tweak but I've never touched it other than the sdram latency.

From riider... Did you ever edit the vcache settings in the System.ini file?

From you shabba...

Yes I did

Are you sure of that? What are the settings you entered?

This may not be your problem but we need to limit the amount of memory Me sees before we go on with this.

In my BIOS, I have the option of running the RAM at 100, 133 and a couple of other speeds. That, as well as setting the RAM latency at 2T (instead of 3T) is what I have made sure of. Is that what we are talking about?

I'm going to close this as solved. I didn't solve it...I simply installed a fresh copy of XP for which none of the driver issues are present. It's a bit slower than ME because of the bloat, but I can use all of my gear now. I was even able to install a better video card. So all's well that ends well.
