Solved Windows ME does not recognize my Orinoco CardI have

March 31, 2013 at 09:33:21
Specs: WINME, PII450/1GIG
I have a Pentium II 450, 1 gig RAM and windows ME on my desktop. Wanting wireless, I purchased and installed an Araya wireless PCI adapter and an Orinoco gold card. Installing the pci was easy...ME recognized and installed it with no hassle. However, even with the driver disc (I bought the card brand new), ME will not recognize the card when I plug it in. When I remove it, the internal speaker will beep telling me something has been removed, but when it is stuck back in, nothing.

Any clue?

That would be my vote. Here's one example...

Am I missing something? Why would you buy a PCI adapter card that requires a wireless card to be inserted in it? Is the gold card a cellular card or wireless card? Does it connect via a wireless router?

If it connects via a wireless router, you should have gotten something like this for about $10-15:

That is exactly what I have (the picture of the Orinoco card you posted). It's for wireless. This computer is upstairs and the router is downstairs. It's not feasible to run an ethernet connection two floors up.

My PCI PCMCIA adapter works only when it wants to...don't remember the manufacturer and model. When it works, it seems to decide some PCMCIA cards are beneath it. Some work, some don't work.

Last Me machine I messed with, I bought a $9.95 USB wireless adapter (insuring it came with 9x drivers), plugged it in and wireless worked.

"This computer is upstairs and the router is downstairs"

Why didn't you get a card like the 2nd one in my other response?

Based on what I had read and knowing I will probably switch back to win98 at some point, the araya and Orinoco seemed the best choice.

Why would you go back to 98? WinME is superior IF you know how to tweak it. Rule #1 - disable system restore & NEVER enabled it again!

I like your setup. A P2 with a gig o' RAM. Don't see that everyday!

HTPC/file server | Pentium M 780 @ 2.82GHz | 4GB | Radeon HD5750
120GB SSD + 2TB/3TB/4TB | Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo drive | Win8 Pro

riider makes some good points. The card I bought (a Rosewill) was 7.99 and the antenna was attached with a 3 foot cable that made moving it for best reception pretty easy.

I also agree with sticking with Me rather than moving to 98Se.

As a side note, had a PII 450 in the house running XP with 768Mb ram. It was a real pig with any browser and connected directly to Comcast cable. Don't be surprised at an internet connection that gives you time to get a cup of coffee between pages.

I think my motherboard, which is an AOpen A6x (maybe...I can't remember exactly) takes up to 1.5 gigs...with PC133 being so cheap, I just got a load of 256MB modules and wound up with a gig. If I had 2 512 modules, I'd do the entire 1.5. I'm running Opera on the system now while connected directly to my FIOS router with an ethernet cable. It's surprisingly quick...I'd put it not far behind my Macbook 2.0 from 2005. Not as quick, mind you, but not slow either.

I won't go back to 98 if I don't need to. ME is the 9x architecture, correct? I'm using this system, mainly, to play my games on from the 90's. I've had some trouble getting Elder Scrolls: Arena and System Shock to work (DOS based games so it's tweak this, tweak that), but I've been able to play everything else and download updates or, in the case of DOOM, new .WAD files.

So I take it I need to find one of the adapters from the first response, one with an antenna? That would work best?
