Why isn't the upgrade option in ME to XP avai

Specs: Windows ME
I'm trying to upgrade (while preserving all files) from Windows ME to Windows XP. Yes, I'm using an incredibly old Dell computer. I can do a clean install easily, however when I run the Windows XP Setup and I select the "Installation Type" the "Upgrade" option isn't available. Any info on this?

You probably need the upgrade disk rather than a full version.

When going from 95 to 98 or 98 to 98 SE or when doing an 'over the top' reinstall with those versions you could just rename win.com to something else and do the install using a full version disk, making sure the install went into the existing directory. I think that worked for ME too.

But I don't know (and kinda doubt) that will work when upgrading to XP. So I don't recommend you try it unless you verify from other sources that it will work.

WinME to WinXP is an officially supported upgrade path, however, if WinME was an upgrade from Win98 rather than a full install, a 2nd upgrade is not supported.

Do have at least 512MB RAM? If not, it's probably not worth installing XP.
