First you need to check what drivers HP/Compaq have for that model as thay may only have Windows XP drivers, but some models thay have Windows Vista drivers too:
Go here: http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/support-dr...

Don't install a Windows version that HP has no drivers for, otherwise the hardware devices like sound, graphics and networking won't work properly. That means Windows 7 is a definite no-no because HP have no Windows 7 drivers for that model.

Then you need to buy Windows XP or Windows Vista if you can find it. Since Windows 7 was launched, XP & Vista have been withdrawn from sale at many stores so you may have to search around a bit or buy online. Buying online is a bit tricky though as you may end up with a pirate copy and a Product Key that does not work or activation that fails.

I can not find the listing of Laptop specifications in the post ?

IF you need Windows, ME is the best choice, though maxing the memory to 320MB would be the first upgradel. IMHO would install Puppy Linux 5.28 which at least supports modern web browsing et-al..

1200-XL300 (original spec)
650 MHz Intel Pentium III mobile processor
64 MB on-board RAM (expandable to 320 MB)
6 GB hard drive
One Type II/III PCMCIA card slot
DVD-ROM drive

Googling is quicker than waiting for an answer....

If you want to install XP, you should have a minimum or 512MB RAM, more would be better. If you want to install Win7, you should have a minimum of 1GB, again, more would be better. If you only have a 6GB HDD, you can forget XP or Win7. Linux would be your best option. Or do a clean install of WinME & make sure to tweak it properly (turn off System Restore immediately & leave it off!). WinME supports wireless if you can find compatible drivers for your wireless device.
