Not enough info. What type of modem & how is it connected to the PC (USB or ethernet cable)? What type of internet service was used on the old Gateway in the past?

Did the old AOL program use a dial-up connection? If so, that's *probably* the problem. Go to Start > Control Panel (use classic view) > Internet Options, then click the Connections tab. If AOL is listed under "Dial-up & VPN settings", highlight AOL, then click Remove. Also, make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected, click Apply, then click OK.

Check Device Manager > Network adapters to make sure your network controller is recognized & the drivers are installed. If it's not listed, go into the BIOS & enable the network/ethernet port. It's probably listed under "integrated peripherals" or something similar. When the system restarts, the drivers will either auto-install or you'll have to download & install the drivers manually.

A Dial-up connection can be made to a dial-up modem without any special software, in Windows 98/ME. But a broadband connection normally needs special software.

Do make *sure* that any internet software which the ISP has provided to you is capable of running on Windows ME (or on Windows 98 at least). It must say so on the box!

If you've been given software for Windows XP or later, that software won't work on the earlier Windows ME.

If necessary, download the drivers for Windows 98 or Windows ME from the ISP's website (using another computer, then transfer them on a floppy disk).
