Solved How to Wipe Hard Drive of Gateway Solo 5300 CX with ME OS

Specs: Windows ME, Intel Pentium III Processor 800Mhz/128 Memory Module
I have a Gateway Solo 5300 CX laptop with Windows ME Operating System. I would like to wipe the hard drive. I tried WipeDrive but after I get the first screen and hit enter (Step 1 - To begin the process, boot up WipeDrive and select the top "WipeDrive" option.), I get two lines
loading init ??? ...........
loading init ??? ........... ready.
and then the screen goes black and nothing happens. I am guessing that WipeDrive doesn't work with ME? Or maybe the processor or memory is too small. This laptop was bought in 2001.

I was wondering what other software was available to use to wipe out an ME hard drive?

If your booting from a CD to run a disk-wipe utility, your version of Windows is irrelevant.
Bootable CD utilities should work with any version, so maybe some of your hardware not compatible.

Anyhow, here's a different boot CD you can try:

Active KillDisk v4.1 for DOS (download the ISO file and make CD from it):

Why the need to wipe it? Reformatting it or removing and recreating the partition(s) and then formatting is adequate under normal circumstances.

I just checked my email and noticed you send me a message about Norton Utilities wipeinfo. I guess I must have sent you that a few years ago. That version was made for fat16 partitioned drives. Your ME drive is probably partitioned as fat32 and wipeinfo wouldn't work with it.

Thank you phil22. KillDisk for DOS worked. I am currently wiping out the laptop.

To DAVEINCAPS: I feel more comfortable wiping it. I have met too many individuals who have bragged about retrieving information from hard drives that people though they had removed confidential data.
