How to get thumb drive to work

Acer Acer aspire ao722-0825 11.6" laptop...

Specs: Laptop
Bear with me, and speak like your talking to a third grader.

My friend gave me a thumb drive to watch some webinars she recorded for me. I plugged the thing into the usb port. In a civilized world, this would simply start playing like a DVD would.

Nothing happens, however. No change whatsoever. No notifications or new icons to click, nothing. I have an Acer laptop playing some kind of windows. I know nothing beyond that. I can't even locate the "start" menu to troubleshoot.

It's a bit tricky if we don't have any idea what operating system you have. Plug in the flash drive (thumb drive) and go to "My Computer" if you can find it somewhere. If so see if you can see it as a drive there then double click that to open it. If you see some files you might be able to double click one to start it doing something (with that particular file at least).

You have posted this in the old Windows ME forum - is that what you think is the operating system it is running?

If it has no start menu then maybe nothing is working properly (not just flash drives). Does this computer work in any other respect - can you get to the desktop or what? Did the laptop used to work or have you only just acquired it?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Yeah the tag you used--aspire ao722-0825--should be a windows 7 machine. But you seem unfamiliar with it like maybe you just got it. Possibly the USB port is bad. Do other USB devices work when plugged into it? Or maybe it's a driver problem. You can check in device manager to see if any problems show there.
