What operating system are you using--linux (since it's in your specs) or windows ME (becasue that's the forum you're in) or something else?

How much ram do you have installed?

Have you successfully played movies from your flash drive previously? Does it act the same when you play a movie from DVD?

"nothing else is open or running"

Most likely there is stuff running, you just don't realize it because it loads at startup & runs in the background.

We need to know which version of Windows you're running, how much RAM you have installed, how much free space is remaining on the hard drive, & what program you're attempting to use to watch the video. If you're running WinME & have too much RAM installed (more than 512MB), that could be your problem. The workaround is to edit the vcache setting in the system.ini file.

And if you're using Windows Media Player, I suggest you install VLC Player & try that instead.

As Daveincaps already replied: is your computer running Windows ME?

If not you have posted in the wrong forum.

If you do have Windows ME, you can try the K-Lite codec pack (version 2.8 seems to work on ME) to play almost any movie you like.

You should also mention your hardware specifications when asking such a question (how much RAM, what processor etc.) and finally you should try a new (clean) installation in case your computer is infected with some kind of virus or malware.

If you use a (clean) ME computer that has never been connected to the internet and if you are sure your USB stick/drive is not infected, with the right hardware specifications you should be able to play almost any kind of movie with Mediaplayer and K-Lite......
