How can I get Mystery screensaver to work on

September 25, 2011 at 15:56:28
Specs: Windows ME
I had a Windows 95 that had Mystery screensaver on it. The Windows 95 crashed, but I got a Windows ME as a gift. The Windows ME has a USB port and the Mystery screensaver. I want to copy the screensaver to a flash drive then run it on my Windows XP. But when I tried, I just get a blank screen on my Windows XP. What can I do?

That's more a desktop theme than just a screensaver so I'm not sure what files you copied. I believe it came on the 95 Plus! and 98 plus! disks and I was part of a regular ME installaiton.

I found this:

The download link appears to still be good.

If I copied the theme would it work then?

I assume that download will install the necessary files.

If you have the screensaver file--the one with an .scr extension--you can copy it to the windows\system32 folder. It should then show up in the screensaver list. But that won't make the entire mystery theme work, only the screensaver.

When I put Mystery.scr and Mystery.dll in c:/windows/system32 and went into display to pick the screensaver, I just got a blank screen. Also, in display, it is named WL32 and not Mystery.

The page I linked to is good. It looks like it has a video that shows how to install the software. I haven't looked at the video cause I'm on dialup and everything is so slow. Is that where you're getting the error?

The download for the software is the mediafire link a little farther down the page. That works too. It's a 10.3 meg file called w98pl.exe.

I realize this was posted years ago, but I recently got the mystery screensaver working on Windows 7.

The files you need are:
Mystery.scr
Mystery.dll
WILDLB32.dll
WL32DLL.dll

The DLL files are located in CAB3 of the Microsoft 95 PLUS! folder called PLUS. They all need to be in the same folder, or placed in your system32 folder.

I can't post links to the 95 PLUS! Iso files, but google can help you OR you can purchase the cd off amazon/ebay for 5 bucks. Good luck!

Thanks for posting. I'm suprised you could still post on a thread almost 3 years old. You might want to post the info in the windows 7 forum, linking to or mentioning this thread as the reason for posting.
