You pushed the 'restart' button on the front panel of your PC or you went to START--SHUTDOWN from the desktop and chose to restart?

I used the start -- shutdown on the screen.

It gets as far as the (http:/windows>)with the curser flashing here. what should I type in to get it to boot up?? (not sure that http is the right letters. Again the ONLY thing I did was a defrag and disk cleanup then restart.

It will run in safe mode.

Start it up again but start tapping F8 before windows starts to load. You should get a boot menu. Choose 'safe mode command prompt only' from that menu.

At the c:\> prompt type scanreg/restore and enter. A list of saved registries should show. Choose to restore one from before the problem started. Then reboot normally and see if it's fixed.

~~~THANKS A MILLION TO ALL WHO RESPONDED~~~
DAVEINCAPS~you were right on it. Thanks..
we restored to a saved registry. A device or something to run a drive was deleated, let microsoft download what it needed. Its up and running like new.
You're welcome. A corrupted system.ini file can give that safe mode like look. That's one of the files that's replaced in a restore. Or it may have been the registry itself. I've never know a defrag to corrupt any files but I guess that's what happened.
