Windows 95 Installation on a HP 540n

Specs: Windows 95, ?
I have a very old & expensive software program that runs on Windows 95. Is it possible for me to install that operating system on a HP Pavilion 540n with an Intel 4 processor? My '96 Dell is on its last leg, and the HP was given to me with the Hard drive wiped clean. Can I do this myself with very little computer installation experience? Oh please say YES!!! I'm in a pickle. Time is a factor. Any bones you can throw my way would be Greatly appreciated.

Yes, but it will take an awful lot of tweaking.

Could you not run Win95 in a Virtual PC after installing say XP on the HP Pavilion 540n:

I'm not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot. Make sure the RAM amount is less than 512MB & check the boot order in the BIOS. It needs to be set to floppy, CD-ROM, hard drive. Save your settings & exit.

You'll need a boot floppy to get things started. If you don't have one, download the file to create one from here:

Here's how to do the install:

If it runs on 95 it will almost certainly run on 98 as well. If you install 98 SE you probably won't have any problems due to the cpu speed. But there are ram considerations as Jam mentioned. And you'll probably want to check the motherboard manufacturer's site to see if 9X drivers are available.

Or, you say your 96 Dell is on its last legs. How so? Maybe a format and reinstall is all you need.

Sis650 drivers for 98 (but not 95) are on the Sis download site.

Apparently the audio chipset on that is the ADI 1885 and I believe there are both soundmax and AC97 drivers for 98.

According to this:

that motherboard is an OEM Asus P4S333-M. You might check the Asus support page and see what they have in the way of 98 drivers.
