Thanks for your responses guys. Dave i got the email and now what do i do? lol...I'm not computer savvy. Here's what i did, after i downloaded it to a folder on my desktop i renamed it to win.com like you said. Then i saved it to a floppy disk then inserted it in my laptop. At the command prompt i typed copy win.com C:\windows. Then it said 1 file copied. I took out the floppy then restarted it. Now it says "VMM32.VXD is required to run windows." I checked the path and its there. I dont have a disk to reinstall it if thats what i really need. Any suggestions?

Just copy it to a floppy disk.

Then boot up the 98 pc. After the 'missing win.com' error message put the floppy with win.cnf in the floppy drive and at the dos prompt type
copy a:\win.cnf c:\windows\win.com and enter. That will rename the file as it's copied.

Then remove the floppy disk and reboot. If no other files are missing it should boot up to the 98 desktop.

Are you sure vmm32.vxd is there? If it is check this old thread:

http://www.computing.net/answers/wi...

The fellow changed the boot order and for some reason, 98 loaded OK. Don't know why it worked but you can give it a try.

I just sent it. I sent the one from 98 second edition. It should work even if you have first edition.

Now click on the 'edit' button on your posting and remove your email address.

It's probably best to start a new thread. This one's kinda old and won't be viewed by many people who may be able to help.

Include your cpu speed and amount of ram and what led up to the problem.
