Solved Win98 CPU speed hotfix Q312108

December 7, 2016 at 17:12:18
Specs: Windows 98
So if Win98 won't boot due to the Windows Protection Error, how is one to install the hotfix? The hotfix is a Windows program, so it can't be run from a command prompt. Trying to get Win98 to run under Hyper-V in Windows 10.

Try a different VM program such as VirtualBox.

Bit of chicken and egg game there certainly, the original fix was usable somewhat in that the box ran well enough to install the update and one could re-install it once the proper files were in place and the box was humming right.

Further the updates can have their contents extracted by WinZip, put on a floppy and installed manually in DOS mode if need be - the update then becomes a delivery package of sorts even when it can't be run.

riider is correct while being as silent as a stone wall about why. Your choice of virtual box is junk if it does not contend with this very issue without you doing much about it. You don't apply the patch to a properly written virtual sandbox to play 98 inside of. You just need a better box. One that transparently handles this issue, dual cores, more cores than that, and an insane amount of other issues too. Just maybe you actually need to sit down and RTFM for the virtual box you have? And having said that, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to learn there is no manual in the first place. Would be a fine testament to how much love they have for us to not have any documentation at all.

Hyper-V does not officially support Win98 as a guest OS.

Ha, haw. Thanks riider, broke it right off in there with that one.

Yeah, I don't think it can fixed with an update either. They probably tried that bit of genius before too and still no workee.
