Never a good idea to pick off files, especially if you have not noted which ones they were. Can you explain eactly how you are going about the re-install (if that's what you are doing)? Have you a boot floppy and a W98 CD?

If it's THE system.ini file you can restore a previous version. Start up the computer. Before the OS starts to load start tapping F8. A boot menu should come up. Choose 'safe mode, command prompt only'. At the c:\> prompt type scanreg/restore and enter. Choose a registry to restore with a date prior to you deleting that file.

Scanreg/restore will restore the previous registry along with system.ini and win.ini.

Depending on what you actually deleted, the above may be all you need to do. If you actually need to do a reinstall, as Derek mentions, you should start off booting with the 98 cd or bootdisk and not the hard drive.

DAVE
Oooo yes. Definitely a bit of brain failure on my part (scandisk /restore, system.ini and win.ini). Maybe XP, Vista, Win7 is overwriting my W98 stuff LOL.

I know, my error. Well, when I turn on my system the system first displays the WIND98 window, then it funs through DOS files, aster it run though the DOS files, it then send me the message " Cannot find System Ini files need to run windows start up disk setup again to install file. Press any key to contiune. I have tried to insert the Win98 CD, at this time the system then shuts off. I have tried to inserted the Win98 CD prior to turning on the system, but the system does not grab the CD to install. It does nothing.

You're welcome. I'm glad it worked out.

Yeah, Derek I know what you mean. Seems like stuff ought to stay where you put it, even knowledge. And you don't know it's been misplaced until you need it!

I don't know why MS didn't continue using scanreg/restore past windows ME. It's really a helpful tool.

Yeah DAVE. I use ERUNT which is a neat little freebie that does save and restore (registry only I think) on XP upwards. In fact, on Vista and Win7 I've found you don't even need to turn off UAC (as they say on their website). You just run the restores by right clicking the file and using "Run as Administrator". You can save registries without even doing that.

I have my own batch files for W95/98 but they don't get used much any more. They probably work for WinME too. Would you believe(?) they restore win.ini and system.ini at the same time LOL.
