As you said, Win98 mspaint works with bmp files only. There is nothing that can change this. Your best option would be to find a third party program that does what you want.

Edit: Apparently there is a way to change this:

Quickest way would be to download IrfanView.

Very neat and small viewer that does the lot.

Fine - thx for popping back.

If you want to use Paint features, from IrfanView you could re-save the jpg as a bmp. Do your editing, then when finished open the bmp with IrfanView and save it back to jpg again. A bit long winded but it works.

If there is a jpg picture that I want to save as bmp, I usually just right-click on it, do "Save As", and change the default format from jpg to bmp, then click "Save".

Not so sure you can do that on W95 without third party software.

On later oprating systems Paint could interchange between bmp & jpg.

MS Paint Filters

Apparently, the mspaint_fix doesn't include a complete registry file and is still dependent on having Office or other MS app install the filters properly in the first place, or it doesn't work because of the missing entries as a stand alone installation.

It is apparent after viewing all the above articles that 95 and NT4 PAINT are quite capable of JPEG viewing and saving. It would stand to reason then so would 98, ME, 2000 and the other PAINTs? And they are if you install MS Photo Editor with Office for example. A true 'fix' with the missing installation part of the registry files does not yet exist?
