when i try to start my computer it says win.com file missing. so i understand that i can copy this file but then i don't know what to do to get it recognized. right now i have c:\> on my screen and when i load a cd and type d: for instance or e: or f: etc. it says "invalid drive specification". so I'm guessing the cd rom deal is not being recognized. how can i fix this?
You can download Win98 boot floppy file ( http://vcic.com/vault/boot98se.exe ) >> copy it to a blank floppy >> boot from the floppy. Also you should have the necessary file on an USB Stick. When you boot from the floppy, type the following:
copy E:\win.com C:\Windows\win.com...where E:\ is the drive letter of the USB and C:\ is the windows path.

Post back your email address or send it in another private message. Also what version of 98 do you have--first or second edition? If you don't know, at the c:\> prompt type ver and enter. Post back what it says.
You're not really green until you're soylent green.
To clear up what Probfixer posted: The file he directed you to download is used to create a boot floppy. Do NOT copy it directly to the floppy because it will be useless. Download it to your PC, double click on it, then follow the instructions. Also, it's doubtful Win98 will recognize a USB stick.
jam, Really, Win 98 might not recognize the USB stick. However, I can see no problem to try with CD.
And yes...don`t copy the file, then open it and follow the instructions (if any)...
