lost sndvol.exe file

June 18, 2009 at 07:43:38
Specs: Windows 98SE
After spending some time identifying my loss of sound issue and reading post after post, I still have been unable to get a copy to download sndvol.exe ,for my win98 SE. Most files I see are for the newer windows OS.
Please help!

... can't you just reinstall win98 so that it overwrites and replaces any missing files?

In fact it is sndvol32.exe (not sndvol.exe) and it goes in c:\windows. Either the W98 or W98SE one will do.

If you have the W98SE CD then it is there in "Win98_46.cab". I can't see much point reloading Windows for this issue, unless it turns out that there are other files missing.

If you have no Win98SE CD it is worth searching your HD for "Win98_46.cab" because sometimes folk save a copy of the Windows CD on there somewhere.

If not I could send one if you use Private Message feature to contact me with your email address. Don't put it here in open text or the spammers engines will find it.

some other bloke...

007,derek
Thanks for the quick response.
My bad, I meant sndvol32.exe
I had previously done as 007 suggested and reloaded the win98se disk, but still have the problem, greyed out for taskbar option, verified the sound board and modem board by removing drivers and physically replacing. So I think the system "sees" the sound and modem cards. STILL NO SOUND.
What to do, I am lost. Maybe put in another sound card??

Yeah, you can extract that file from either the 98 disk or its location on the hard drive (if it's there) by running SFC from START--RUN. But it sounds like maybe it's not set up right or you don't have the drivers installed.

Check in device manager for any hardware with a yellow ? or ! next to it. That indicates a problem with that hardware.

Thank you all for the redsonse
007,
Here is the pertinent output per your instructions:
Of the 5 PCI slots , they identified only
slot 1: available
slot 2 available
slot 3 in use
I have:
slot1: empty
slot2:sound card
slot3 :local network board
slot4 56K modem
slot5: empy
They have identified the local network board by name and is the only one "in use" as they reported. However, they named the modem without a corresponing "in use" characterization.
They have not identified the sound board which is a Turtle Beach (I no longer have driver floppy--got lost in a move)But, as I previously mentioned, I had "removed" that board in DEVICE MANAGER and also physically removed it after which I verified its absence in DEVICE MANAGER. Susequent physical installment of the board and computer bootup caused the system to identify "new hardware" and I assume install a driver which was indicated in the DEVICE MANAGER. It now shows
Modem: US Robotics 56K Voice Win
Sound video and game controller: wave device for voice modem.
Hope this helps
I

If 'sound, video and game controllers' only shows the wave device for your modem then the sound card drivers aren't installed. An old turtle beach card may not be PnP and 98 may not have native drivers. Best to download them from the above link.

007,
Thanx a bunch for your invaluable input.as well as the others.
I located the proper driver from the TB website you suggested but was unable to download the zip file because of the lack of graphic files needed.Also,.I couldn't get the "detective " software to work.
Another problem is that after removal of the existing driver from device manager , the system again finds the same wrong driver on startup (located in Windows probably for the cheaper sound card that came with the basic system which was changed by DELL) and I'm wondering if I can just simply overwrite with the right one.
Another thing is that the instructions say "not for DELL) so I'm wondering.why;but will try it anyway once I can get the proper graphic files.

Sounds like you may not have the video driver installed either.

You can go to 'add/remove programs' in control panel and see if you can uninstall the incorrect drivers there. Sometimes they show there and sometimes they don't. If it does keep loading the wrong drivers you can still usually force the install of the correct ones. Note that 98 will probably say they are not the right ones because it's assuming the right ones are already installed.

Another way to keep them from loading after deleting them from device manager is to delete their .inf file in WINDOWS\INF. But if you don't know the .inf file name you can't go that route as there are hundreds of files in that folder.

Well, I finally got this resolved knowing as you guys pointed out. that the sound card was not detected.
I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't check to see whether the sound card was installed properly, which it wasn't
Reinastalled board and got the driver from DELL and installed
same. DONE!
Again, thanks for all your help. You guys are great.
