Specs: windows 98 se, 383mb's of ram
i put a older dvd drive on my computer, and installing a player, DVDx that supported windows 98 se, but could not get it to work, so i uninstalled it. when i reboot, i got an explorer error message, "this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down". now my desktop does not load, and task manager is empty. I did an over the top install of windows 98 se, but that did not help. can someone make a suggestion before i go further? thanks, Jimmy

That's an old favorite, especially if you need to 'go back'. You were right
to uninstall the program first, otherwise you leave a lot of files around.
It is always best to try it before resorting to an over the top install.

Sometimes this command can be useful too:-

scanreg /fix

If you can get into Windows, the scanreg commands can be run by simply shutting down and restarting in MS-DOS (via start button).
