How to disable hardrive speakers on laptop

Specs: Windows 98 Plus, Intel Pentium processor/80.0mb ram
I have looked around quite a bit, but am still having troubles with this. I am trying to disable the modem speaker on my Compaq Armada 7710MT. Yes, I know this is an old model, but it's the only computer I have that is currently running on Windows 98. I want to disable the speakers without ripping apart the actual computer, but I cannot turn them off.

I have tried going to control panel > modem and moving the slider to off.

The only time I really get to hear the modem is when dialing in using AOL 3.0.

If anybody could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I haven't worked with dial-up in a long time but you need to edit your modem command settings. Adding m0 will turn off the speaker. This should help explain:

"to turn off sound, go into the Control Panel, go to Modems, select your modem and click the Properties button. Click the Connection tab and click the Advanced button. You see a fill-in box called "Extra Settings." This box is where you can include any modem initiation commands you want to include. In your case, you want the speaker turned off, so add ATM0 (that's a zero, not an o). Click OK twice, then Close."
