Specs: Windows 98
I need to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP because I can no longer access most internet sites with my old version of Explorer. Everything else still works fine.

I daresay you can purchase an upgrade disk. However, you need to think carefully about doing so for the following reasons:

1. Upgrades are nearly always dodgy - clean install is best.

2. There might not be any suitable XP drivers for your hardware.

3. The hardware might not be man enough for XP, it could crawl.

On the last point you need to supply the spec for your computer.

Without more info, and if you really want XP, I would suggest looking around for a cheap computer with XP already on it and a reasonable spec.

There is a free alternative. Download Opera browser 10.63 and use that on your W98 instead of IE. This version, released Oct 12 2010, is the last one suitable for W98. It is fast, lightweight and not anything near as old as your IE. That makes it safer by age and also less hackers attack Opera:

Agreed. It's likely (as Derek says) that if your machine is running Win98, you just don't have enough horsepower (for lack of a better term) to run XP decently.

Actually Opera 11 will run on Windows 98. See here:

http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/2010/12/opera-11-compatible-with-kernelex/

Apparently need to run in "Windows 2000 SP4" compatibility mode, BUT maybe not.

I know what you mean about IE problems with 98. Even with 6.1 I had problems with online banking, paypal and ebay. I'm not sure if alternate browsers have the same problem.

As already mentioned, look for a used PC that already has XP on it. It might be easier and cheaper to go that route.

Re #4

Thx for info, looks interesting but I've never tried.
Seems 10.63 was last "official" version for W98.

I've tried kernelex on an old P2 machine running WinME (fresh install), just to see what's it's all about. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I wasn't impressed.
