Well, the first step is purchasing a copy.

When you have done that, post back.

Since Microsoft no longer sells Windows 95, the best way to obtain Windows 95 is through eBay.

Try to pick up a new copy; you don't know the condition of used software that is 16 years old. I also recommend CD ROM if your computer can take it because floppy disks corrupt over time and no longer work. Plus, CD install is much faster than floppy.

The link below is to all the new copies of Windows 95 currently available on eBay.

sdfox is correct---you need to purchase a copy of win95 (and asking for illegal downloads here will get you banned).

Technically, new and used copies on ebay aren't legal either--one cd for one computer--even if the disk was never used because it came with a PC that had 95 preinstalled. But come on, nobody really cares.

Yeah, they're cheap enough on ebay. Or someone may give or let you borrow a copy they're not using. I've found a couple dozen at goodwill--of course if you go there looking for something specific you never find it.

Do you plan on installing it in a virtual machine within windows 7 or will you acquire an old P-I or something similarly aged and install it there? Please don't install it as the booting OS on a new machine. 95 support for new hardware is non-existent.

Derek, I agree, yea eBay has strict guidelines with software piracy and I guess if Microsoft hasn't bitched to eBay yet then they don't care.

I'm sure Microsoft is more concerned about unauthorized uses of their current releases Windows 7 and Office 2010 than they are with old unsupported releases. There are loads of websites that host software ("airpetaby" comes to mind) and look how long that site has lasted.

I mentioned in a thread a few years ago when the subject came up that I thought it was to microsoft's benefit to turn a blind eye to the buying and selling of their outdated software. That activity creates a low end market of working systems that can be a training ground for future users of their new (and more expensive) products.
