Microsoft Windows 98

Specs: Windows XP
I need to ghost a win 98 machine. Is there any software out there that would do this? Norton and Acronis say they do not support win 98.

I have used Ghost 2001 and 2003 on a Win 98 machine successfully.

Perhaps it is only the newer versions that cannot.

Ghost/clone to another drive? If so, just use the utility available from either of the hard drive manufacturers.

Hiren's Boot CD has ghosting and other utilities. Boot from cdrom drive first (set in bios). The download is an image that you burn to a cd-r.

If you are cloneing you can use Acronis and boot from the CD and clone it like that but it will not install on Win 9x.

The OP asked for help with ghosting (imaging) a Win98 computer. Why would you suggest something that you know won't work with Win98?

My experience of Win98 is that it is REAL easy to back up:
ESPECIALLY if you use DCopy32 or XXCopy - www. XXCopy . com
I have copied the WIndows and all sub dirs to make a back up.
It is easy to boot (in dos) and rename the windows dir to go back to previous versions.
- you ALSO need to track / copy a few files in the root dir C:\ - but these do not change (most of the time)...
Good luck.
OH - to make new disks, the problem is usially the MBR, occasionaly Config.Sys / AutoExec.bat etc...

OtheHill,

Acronis true image will not install on 98. But you can use the boot CD and clone to another drive. I have done this before I know what I am talking about. If you do not believe me I will make a youtube video on it.

Don't you think that is pretty inconvenient. If you have two computers that are networked you could just image the 98 drive that way. The conventional thought is to install an imaging program on the host computer and run it from there.

If they have the true image disk it would be easier yo use the disk to clone the drive. I am not sure if they are cloning or backing up. Either way you boot to the disk on a 98 computer. The destination drive will need to be slave if it is a clone.

You may be referring to an earlier version of Acronis. The current version, which is all that is for sale, will not work on a Win98 computer.
True Image 2010
System Requirements
Supported operating systems

* Windows XP SP3
* Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
* Windows Vista SP2 (all editions)
* Windows 7 (all editions)
