Specs: Windows Win 7 64 bits, AMD VISION / 6 Gb
Hi to all,

I am running Win 7 Pro 64 bits on my laptop and I widely use the XP virtual machine feature to run older programs which do not work under Win 7.

Unfortunately, my PC is getting somewhat old and I'm afraid I'll have to consider replacing it sooner or later. Bad luck, all PC's are now delivered with Win 8 installed, and downgrading to Win 7 seems to be a pretty tough issue !

My question : does Win 8 (Pro or whatever edition) allows for installing a virtual XP machine ?

Thanks to all in advance for your tips. CB

For further info, please read this and this.

Please read carefully the requirements of Hyper-V, both software-wise and hardware-wise.

Hope the articles provided are helpful.

Probably. See this link for more info:

Not all machines have Win8. You can still buy new machines with Win7(but those with Win7 are beginning to disappear):

You need to also define what you mean by your machine "getting old" (specs on it).

You can use hyper-V and install Win XP in virtual mode. But you cannot use XP Mode with free Windows licence. You need Windows XP disk and a valid licence to activate Windows XP after installation.

Hi T-R-A,

Thanks for the link. The posts are in fact highly technical and a bit over my modest understanding of virtual machines ...

My laptop will be 3 years old in a few months. Not so old really, but with no more warranty after that in case of hardware breakdown.

In my country (Switzerland in Europe), all new PCs sold in large stores have Win 8 installed ! forget about Win 7.

Kind regards- Claude

Hi Suatcini,

Thanks for your very interesting reply.

If I understand correctly your post, I would be able to install a virtual XP machine within Win 8, provided that I own a valid windows XP licence (which is the case, as I got an original MS Win XP pro CD).

Yet, is this feasible with all versions of win 8, or is the Pro version needed (as the XP virtual machine works only within Win 7 Pro) ?

Thanks in advance to clarify - Claude
