Is there another way to fix a temporary profile other than a reload of Windows? I've had this problem before. I tried the whole renaming registry S key thing to .bak and all it did was brought "the user profile service failed the sign-in".

EDIT:
I think this was caused by Advanced System Care 6 doing a registry defrag at boot, or maybe me shutting it down with the power button.

Reload Windows and steer clear of any of these magic programs that claim to fix or improve your computer. Even when they are not scams they often put on more problems than they fix. We've seen them all wreck computers on here.

If you MUST use a registry cleaner (unnecessary because Windows ignores invalid entries) then the one in CCleaner is about the safest.

I got it fixed, sort of. I realised I had no backups except a Windows 7 so I copied the NTUSER.DAT from the Windows.old (I upgraded from 7) and it logged in, sort of. At least it will give me time to backup my stuff. I have used Advanced System Care for a while now and haven't had this problem before. I think I'll keep using it on a weekly basis just after a weekly backup just in case anything goes wrong. Thanks for your help.
