A friends new Dell pc came with a pre-installed Windows 8.Affter a few weeks of use and a 8 yr old daughter, the boot configuration data file is missing. I was wondering if I can just use my Windows XP installation disc to boot from and recover the file???
No, A Windows XP CD will not repair Windows 8, the two are entirely different.
A factory recovery is probably the best way to proceed. Check the Dell documentation for instructions on how to do that.Be aware, however, that factory recovery will erase any files that your friend may have saved on the hard drive, so hopefully they have already been backed up somewhere else.
