Win 8 forgetfull and loses things

Win 8 is screwed up. Wife's computer, 2 months old. Problems started when she was attempting to get the E-mail address pane up on Thunderbird.

On start up after entering password and a long wait comp goes to a blue screen with work START and small picture from background of desktop - nothing clickable. Sits there until she Control-Alt-Delete a couple of times then goes to desktop.

Any changes she makes - mouse single click, pictures saved, etc. - are lost when she restarts the computer the next time. Thunderbird forgets all address, passwords, etc. Firefox forgets her homepage, she must re-enter every time she starts computer again. Clock on computer has never held the right time.

Old stuff she put on prior to onset of trouble seems to still be there although she can't find some of her pictures that she saved previously. If she saves something to my pictures, it is gone the next time she starts the computer. Nothing in download folder anymore as well.

I did put Classic Shell on it when it was first received. That seems to be still functioning.

Wow, a lot of symptoms - makes it hard to pin it on anything in particular.

Windows 8 itself is quite reliable so I'm wondering if you have a hardware fault.
For example, clock not keeping the right time is usually the CMOS battery. Maybe you have some poor connections.

Might be interesting to save a picture to my pictures, close the screen then check to see if it has got there - see if it still there after restart.

In the meantime keep watching to see what others make of this lot.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Well, I did a system restore on the wife's computer and it seems to be running okay. She lost pictures and other stuff she downloaded after the restore point. Tapped the heck out of F8 until system went to sign-in.

By the way, how do I update system ID info that appears in the header? The FIC homebuilt is gone replace by new HP.

System Restore doesn't usually lose pictures unless they have been put in system places. If you can remember the name of one of them do a search for it. It might still exist somewhere on the computer and if so the rest will be there too.

Sorry, I've lost your drift - what header and where?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
