Why do saved Win 8 WordPad open with strange symbols?

June 9, 2015 at 13:53:54
Specs: Windows 8
I just opened up WordPad on my computer to find that some of the letters were replaced with strange symbols that looked like chinese or something. Is this a virus or do I need to change the settings and how do I get rid of it?

If wordpad doesn't recognize the format of the document you opened in it then some of what it displays is going to be gibberish. What is the extension of the file you opened? Depending on what software you used to originally create the file you may be able to convert it to something wordpad understands.

Edit I assumed the odd characters were in a document you opened on wordpad and not a problem with wordpad itself, such as symbols instead of letters in its dropdown menu or taskbar headings.

Oh and I think word/wordpad had some formatting characters that usually are hidden but if you enable showing them, that might be what you're seeing.

Never mind I restarted my computer and it was fine, but now I know what to do if it happens again. Thanks for the help.

You're welcome. I'm glad it seems to have fixed itself. I wonder why it did it in the first place.
