Go to system manufacture's website and download the latest drivers for the optical drive for your system and see if that helps.
I believe that the CD uses a different laser than the DVD so it is possible for one to be bad while the other is still working. If this is the case and you are under warranty, contact them about replacing it. Otherwise you may need to determine how important having this ability is to you.
Note that you can 'rip' an audio CD on another computer and transfer the files over to the laptop and play them anytime you want from the hard drive.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

If the cd laser has died (and sometimes they do) if not under warranty... you can either obtain a replacement unit and install it, or use an external unit. The latter is the easiest replacement option - typical external replacement unit can be found for about £20/$30 or so.

Unlikely but possible is that the cd lens merely requires cleaning, There are cleaner cd kits about, and easy to use.

Have you tried the CD on another computer?

Commercial audio CD's are not usually mp3's although you should still be able to see them and play them on a computer.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
