Specs: Linux
After signing in and submitting password etc whilst welcome is flashing the screen keeps going blank after a few seconds. I have tried re -booting, switching power off etc without any success.

You have put this on the Windows 8 forum yet your spec says Linux. Which is it?

The exact model number of your Lenovo Series A5 might help.

Firstly, one more thing along the lines of those you've already tried:
Turn off, disconnect from domestic power and remove the main laptop battery. Hold the Power Off/On button down for about 20 seconds to discharge the motherboard. It has been known at odd times to get "stuck" computers going again and is easy to try.

If it has a Wifi key (I couldn't find one in Google) try turning it off and restarting.

Another idea, press Ctrl+Alt+Del keys when Welcome Screen arrives and see if Task Manager stays up. If so close screen and click any desktop icon.

Question, did you backup the system?

If push comes to shove see here:

Factory reset will remove everything but at #12 you can recover your own data first. You will obviously have to download the disks and create them on another computer.
