USB Drives not recognized

Specs: Windows 8, 2.401 GHz Intel i7-3630QM/ 8052 MB DDR3 1600Mhz
I hate asking n00b questions like this.

My laptop all of a sudden stopped accepting USB drives. Just, flat out quit. It supplies power, so if I plug in my kindle or cellphone they charge alright. and my USB wireless mouse is working like a charm, but anytime I plug in a USB thumb drive or my GPS to update my roadmaps, it won't connect.

Time to quote 'The IT Crowd': "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"
Actually, on that note, I can't really do turn it off right this second because I'm rendering a rather long video of a local public meeting, and it can't be stopped :-\

Nevermind; reboot fixed the problem.I need to do my own troubleshooting more before posting questions -_-
