Solved Trying to install 3rd party screensaver in windows 8

July 19, 2014 at 07:43:01
Specs: Windows 8
Hi i'm trying to install a screensaver in windows 8. I've added it to " C:\Windows\System32\ " but it does not show up in file explorer. Interestingly it does show up in " file:///C:/Windows/System32/" using chrome.

The screensaver is from sorceforge:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/quo...

The screensaver displays quotes that you have written in a text file. I need to find the folder it's in to modify the accompanying quotes folder. Even if I right click and select the install option when the screensaver comes on it states it cannot find quotes file. Thanks in advance.

"I followed the instructions in #9"

I am going to start at the easiet to fix problems first.

Run all of these, in this order.

Step 1: Download & run Unhide
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/for...
http://download.bleepingcomputer.co...
To run Unhide, simply download it onto your Desktop If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.and then double-click on the Unhide icon. The program will open a black box and start making the files on your fixed disks visible again. Please note, that this program will not unhide removable drives like flash cards and usb drives as the FakeHDD rogues do not target these types of drives. Once it has finished, the program will display a Windows alert stating that your files have been restored. You should then reboot your computer for all of the settings to go into effect.
When Unhide is complete, it will create a logfile on the Windows Desktop called Unhide.txt.
Copy & Paste the contents of the log in your next post please. Let me know if it doesn't produce a log.

Step 2: Reboot

Step 3: Run AdwCleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Clean.
Confirm each time with Ok.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please Copy & Paste the contents of that logfile with your next answer.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Step 4: Run Junkware Removal Tool

Download Junkware Removal Tool onto your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
Warning! Once the scan is complete JRT will shut down your browser with NO warning.
Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
Temporarily disable your antivirus and any antispyware real time protection before performing a scan.
Click this link to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.

Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7/8, right-click JRT and select Run as Administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved onto your Desktop and will automatically open.
Copy and Paste the contents of the JRT.txt log please.

Have you thought maybe just using 3D text in your win 8 screensavers that it will do the same thing?

Thanks but 3D text only allows single text quotes. This program displays random quotes from a text file. You can edit the text file to customise the list of quotes. I thought that the problem might be unique to Windows 8 because I haven't had trouble adding files to " C:\Windows\System32\ " before.

Any chance that it's a hidden file?

If you search *.scr does it find it?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I tried that other .scr files show up but not the right one. Also I unhid all files it's still not visible. If I try copying and pasting the screensaver to the System32 folder it states that the file is already there. Windows explorer doesn't show it though.

When you did the unhide did you also unhide protected system files too?

It is something I would only recommend temporarily as a means of checking this file because leaving it set that way causes system files to show in user areas.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I just tried unhiding protected system files. The screensaver files I copied are still not showing. I tried to copy them again but I keep being asked to overwrite the copies I put there earlier.

Can you list the file names you put into C:\Windows\System32 please?

I assumed it was just the scr contained in the zip but you mentioned files (plural).

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Lets look deeper.

Download OTL, save & run from your Desktop. If your default download location is not the Desktop, drag it out of it's location onto the Desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/OTL.exe
http://www.itxassociates.com/OT-Too...
Double click the OTL icon to start the tool. (Note: If you are running on Vista or Windows 7 accept UAC alert)
1: When the window appears, underneath Output at the top, make sure Standard output is selected.
2: Select Scan all users
3: Change Drivers to All
4: Under the Extra Registry section, check Use SafeList
5: In the lower right corner, checkmark "LOP Check" and checkmark "Purity Check".
6: Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted.

When the scan is complete, two text files will be created on your Desktop
OTL.Txt <- this one will be opened
Extras.txt <- this one will be minimized

The logs are large, upload them using this, or upload to site of your choosing. I upload to Imgur.com for images & load.to for files ( neither need an account ) Give us the links please.

Yes there are 2 files. The .scr is called QuoteScreensaver. The other is a text file with the quotes ( quotes.txt ). Neither shows up in windows explorer. They are visible when I check the folder using chrome.

Something weird is going on because it seems the files are there but have become invisible from Windows Explorer. It sounds a bit suspicious to me. Best bet is to progress with response #9.

The files are obviously there--either hidden or as system files that windows doesn't like to show or they're inside a subfolder or a different folder that you're not looking in.

Can you view the other files in the windows\system32 folder or are they not showing also?

Followed all 3 instruction sets. Text files are copied & pasted below. After I ran the three programs I still couldn't find the screensaver in System32. I downloaded an alternative file explorer called Explorer++ from https://explorerplusplus.com/. I copied the files to sytem32 again using this. The files are visible now and the program is working as it is supposed to. Not sure which technique worked but thanks a lot for all of the help. I appreciate it.

Nice work, probably not completely clean yet.

Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ( MBAM ) Free Version. Use Quick scan. Copy and Paste the contents of the log, in your reply please.

If your MBAM log indicates "No action taken". That's usually a result of NOT clicking the Apply Actions button after the scan. In most cases, a restart will be required.
