"My son had mistakenly wrongly inserted the pen drive"

He must have really forced it because the plugs/ports are designed in such a way that they can't (supposedly) be plugged in improperly. Check the USB port for physical damage.

possibly "son" forced the drive usb connector in the wrong way round... - i.e. didn't line ensure the "gap" on the drive's usb connector were contra to that on the socket?

Although it would really take some serious effort to get a usb plug in the wrong way round?

Rear port should have worked as well as the front port for the flash drive as long as it was inserted correctly.
What have you tried on that rear USB jack?
Have you tried the flash drive on another port or computer?

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
