"i have tried alot of different things"

How about telling us what you have tried so we don't just repeat what you have done. Have you tried turning the volume down in the Windows audio mixer control panel?

In control panel under "Hardware and Sound" there is an option "Manage Audio Devices". There you can choose to disable (in the "Recording" tab) or set your headset mic as default. Assuming it recognizes it. And assuming you are using Windows 7. If not then just search for Manage Audio Devices in the start menu. Hope this helps.

I don't need to be right, but I am never wrong.

Just follow these options to turn off the built in mic .
1. click on sound icon and click on mixer.
2. now you need to click system sound. once you will reach there then you need to click on recording.
3. now you need to run the application and click on recording. and now you can mute the sound.

Is this a USB headset? Or an analogue headset with speaker and mic mini jacks? Or a Bluetooth headset?

Hi brandon9057,

To customize your headphone and microphone settings for use with Windows Live Messenger, use the Windows Live Messenger Tuning Wizard. For more information, see Windows Live Messenger Help.

If you are using your headset for programs other than Windows Live Messenger, you can adjust the audio and microphone settings in the Windows Control Panel. For information on how to do this, you can check this useful article.
