Specs: Windows 8.1
Brand new for Christmas. Was working fine, did a windows upgrade and installed some new programs. Lost sound. Did complete system check, shows everything is working properly. Reinstalled sound drivers. No change.

Go to your Desktop screen;

Is the Speakers icon displayed?
If so, has it been muted?

Move the volume slider up, then release it. Is there a system/'dong' noise?
If so. at least we know the speakers are working.

Plug in a set of headphones... Any sound now?

Still nothing; Anything showing up in Device Manager (eg, yellow exclamation mark).

Option 1
maybe your drivers/bios isnt compatible with windows 8.1 .......try to check your drivers/bios then look for the latest version of it for windows 8.1 .

Option2

try to go to troubleshooting then troubleshoot hardware and sounds

According to trouble shooting, everything is working fine. No errors icons, nothing. Just downloaded a windows 8.1 driver, too.

If I refer back to my first post;

Go to your Desktop screen;
Taskbar/Notification area: Is the Speakers icon displayed?
If so, has it been muted?

Move the volume slider up, then release it. Is there a system/'dong' noise?
If so. at least we know the speakers are working.

Plug in a set of headphones... Any sound now?

Thank you Peet100 and researcher101 for your help. I tried everything and NOTHING worked!!! Finally after spending hours on this, had to restore it back to its original settings and windows 8. STILL NOTHING. We then unplugged the power cable while it was booted up and that fixed the problem. Go figure! Also lost bluetooth compatibility and that was also restored. Now will try to upgrade again and see what happens!
