Internet Explorer and Skype Icons names after update

March 14, 2013 at 07:40:24
Specs: Windows XP
After my computer updated last night, my IE and Skype Icons on the desktop had different names under them.

The icons were the same as always but under them they both had xxxxxxxx(1), instead of "Internet Explorer" and "Skype".

The only thing I have added was Google Chrome since the last update.

I did a system restore to before the Chrome downlowd and everything went back to normal.

Will they continue to change to xxxxxx(1) after each update from this point on and will I always need to restore to get them back to normal?

Did you actually try opening them before doing system restore?
You might have been able to fix them by just simply renaming them to their correct names. Or you could have just deleted those two shortcuts and created new ones from the executable files in "Program Files".

You won't be able to rely on System Restore indefinitely to fix it, because as time progresses, old restore points get removed to make room for new ones.

So at some point, if it happens again, you will have to learn how to delete corrupted shortcuts and create new ones. It isn't difficult for the average computer user.

I doubt this will happen on every update - sometimes you get these odd glitches.

When there are updates MS makes a new restore point to you would mostly be able to go back to it. However, system restore can goof it up at times so it is best avoided unless all other avenues have been explored.

By the way, you've posted in the Windows 8 forum yet your specs say XP - which is it?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
