That sounds like you've got the keyboard set up for United States instead of United Kingdom, or vice-versa, in Windows Regional Settings for the keyboard.

Phil you are a star. Changed from English (United States) to English (United Kingdom) on newly loaded Windows 8 and fixed problem. For those with similar problem you may wish to carry out further investigation on how to do for the method I used did take some time to complete.
Click RH side of screen ( I only have mouse input version laptop) and select settings.
Select Control Panel and click onto Clock, Language & Region.
Click on add on a language and on RH side click on options (in blue)
On LH side click on Add an input method scroll down to and select QWETY English United Kingdom
Go back to top bar and click on Language option (four item along on bar) Check to bar has changed It will still show on RH side English ( United States) however next box will show English United Kingdom
RH click onto start. Choose any blank or application and try fix which if the same result as for me should work
