So are you saying it is OK now?

Not sure what you don't like about Windows 8.1 but if it is the lack of the old style Start Menu then you can install this freebie and make it look like Windows 7:
http://www.classicshell.net/

Windows 10 does have a start menu, rather like Win 7 but a bit more jazzy. Otherwise nothing much has fundamentally changed with computers since Windows 95 - just a matter of getting used to where MS have put things and call them. Google can be a great help.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Do a search for Windows Update Diagnostic.

If you know when this issue occurred you could try System Restore (Windows) to a date/time just before updating failed. Your own stuff will be retained.

As this is most certainly not a "hardware" issue I'll alert the mods so that this thread can be shifted to the Windows 8 forum.

If you happen to like Windows 10 it is still possible to get the free update (or it was very recently when I looked). Can find out more if need be.

David,
Great to hear that it is working.
Please select a Best Answer if possible to mark the thread Solved.
For a while now I have recommended that those on Windows 7 stay with it but those on Windows 8 & 8.1 upgrade to Windows 10. Up until the end or July this was free but I understand that that offer has ended. If it is still available, it might be better for you.
I find personally that Windows 8 was an annoying system and important things were hidden and hard to find. I guess MS felt that many problems people had were when they fiddled with things they understood very little so hiding them made it safer. Widows 10 is better but 8.1 is manageable if you give it time to learn it.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

See this for still obtaining Win 10 free offer (my #10):

It is dated 09/22/16 but hopefully the suggestions still work.

Like many I moved on from Win 8 to 10 so I haven't a Win 8 computer to hand.

I found this tho:

Or you could do a general Google search which unearths quite a few hits.

"Great now how about my normal colors on my windows and taskbar"

Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Advanced > Settings > Visual Effects > Custom.
Change settings to as per this SS ( Screenshot )

try to restore your computer first and then you need to run the update. this will start working fine.
