Solved how to copy file names only

Specs: Windows 8.1
Hi,I have many files on a WD external h/drive.I wish to be able to copy file names only to a document without copying the files.Will not let me high light the names only.thanks terry

I'm not sure how to do it in windows but from command prompt you can type
dir h: /s>filename.txt and enter. Where h: is the drive and filename.txt is the file the names are copied to. The /s will have it search any subfolders also. The file filename.txt will be deposited in whatever folder you ran the command from.

The file names will be listed folder by folder and not as a single list for the entire drive.

Someone much wiser than myself may be able to tell you how to do it in windows or there may be third party software that will do it too.
