Solved how to boot second operating system

Specs: Windows 7
system has two op's win 8.1 and win 7. 8 is the default. had to format win 8 and reload. Now only win 8.1 shows on boot screen

Run msconfig and go to the boot tab. If both are showing there, I believe that there should be an advanced options and you can choose default and optional boot.
When you reinstalled Windows 8 you should have chose custom and set up the dual boot there.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hopefully you didn't also format the windows 7 partition. Assuming that one is OK, when you formatted the windows 8 partition the additional boot options were removed. There's some info here about using BCDEdit to add an entry:

I think a much easier way is to download and install a free tool call EasyBCD https://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/
The Non-commercial freebie one will do. You will be using the Add New Entry area of the program. Hopefully your windows 7 partition is still intact.
