Solved How do I stop emails in Windows mail appearing twice?

Dell Inspiron black 15r notebook
January 16, 2015 at 01:45:41
Specs: windows 8.1
Every email that appears in my Windows mail (Windows 8.1) is duplicated. An online search for information is either outdated or applies to a different OS. I tried one suggestion which was to right-click All Mail and hide the folder (apparently unread and all mail are appearing at the same time?) but there isn't an option to hide the folder. My email account is gmail.
It is annoying me intensely now so would love to solve it!

" 'imap.gmail.com'"
I would in your email client, create another account, same as your other one, except the new one will be POP.

Import what you want out of your IMAP account ( including Address's ) & when you are all happy, delete the IMAP account.

"My email account is gmail"

1: Is it IMAP or POP?

2: Is Gmail online getting Duplicate mail?

I have checked my online gmail and in the settings it looks like both IMAP and POP are enabled; and no, I don't get duplicates online, only in my account in Windows.

I can't find settings in my Microsoft account to check this but in their forum an answer to something else said that "it isn't possible to set up a live.com account using IMAP, only POP/SMTP." so must be the former?

Hi again,

I found my account (Microsoft and gmail) and the info for each. In both there is a box to tick for 'contents to sync' - the MS account is not ticked while the gmail one is. For the gmail account the incoming email server says 'imap.gmail.com' and outgoing is 'smtp.gmail.com' while the MS account has no such info.
I looked at all the sites you've recommended and I don't think I'm seeing the wood for the trees! The digitalunite site showed that gmail should have IMAP enabled and other than that I'm stumped and it is probably something so simple.
:-(
