Is this a USB optical drive or flash drive you're booting from?

When you use a bootable cd or dvd the bios normally says 'press any key to boot from cd/dvd' when it sees you have a bootable disk there. On first bootup for OS installation you let it boot from the optical drive. On subsequent bootups during the install you let it boot from the hard drive.

Either you're pressing 'any key' or you're not getting that option. If the latter then when it first reboots after the installation starts you need to go into bios setup and put the hard drive ahead of the USB drive so it automatically boots from the hard drive during the rest of the installation and not the USB.

The first link shows the reboot warning. I suggested letting it reboot but before it starts loading from any of the drives you go into bios setup and change the boot order. Is that what you did when you got the BSOD?

The second link has a trailing dot (.) that prevents the page from loading. If you back that off the page loads OK but it just shows the windows 8 setup start image. I assume that only shows when you boot from the installation drive.

Since you're installing from a flash drive it's possible you have some jury-rigged setup that might not be working right. You may need to check Johnw's links and make a new setup drive.

Either that or maybe some hardware problem that's preventing the completion. Have you verified that 8.1 will install on that ultrabook?
