As it is quick and easy to do, first discharge your motherboard components. Turn off computer, remove domestic power, remove battery if it's a laptop. Before re-assembling hold the Power Off/On button down for at least 20 seconds. At odd times it unsticks computers so you might be lucky.

Otherwise let us have the model number of the computer.

Has the computer a floppy drive (that is usually drive A)?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Another possibility; providing you have some system restore points set...

Go back to a point prior to the download of the apparently offending software download?

Equally if you can boot to safe mode, perhaps remove the software whilst booted into safe mode.

Also (and all the above presume you can boot into either normal or safe mode) safeguard "all" your personal files. Copy them to dvd at least; and verify the copies are OK.

Then if you "have" to go the very drastic step of a factory reset (not a windows system restore) your files will be safe elsewhere. Factory reset/restore wipes "all' your personal files in the process; thus wise to have them duplicated elsewhere (at any time).

Are you sure you're not booting from a cd? Many older boot cd's created a ram/virtual drive at A:. Of course if you do have a floppy drive then make sure there's no disk in it as well.
