Solved formatting a CD-R disc in windows 8

December 10, 2016 at 08:24:20
Specs: Windows 8.1
I, too, am having the same problem. While trying to burn music to a CD-R disc, I get the message I need to format the disc. I have looked on the internet, and have had no luck finding an answer that I understand, or that has helped me with the problem.

What program are you using to burn the disc?

Are you trying to produce a CD for playing only on a computer?

If you are trying to produce a normal, standard, domestic audio disc there is no need to format (it is undesirable). Try this small free program, which is easy to use. Don't be fooled by the name, it is nothing to do with Windows XP, works fine in all Windows versions and produces DVDs as well as CDs:

Otherwise tell us exactly what you are doing, including file types, and when you get this message.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You're using a brand new just-out-of-the-package disk?

Using that same drive can you record data (non-audio) disks OK?

Possibly a patronizing question, but are you sure you have a drive that's capable of burning disks? Win8.1 was late enough into flash drive adoption that not every laptop came with a CD burner.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to respond. The program you referred me to, helped solve my problem, or at least for now. I have had success in the pass burning music to a disc, but I am not sure why I got this message this time, maybe it was the HP CD-R Inkjet Printable disc. I don't know. I know enough about computers to get myself in trouble, but at 74, I don't plan on giving up. Thanks, again

Good to hear and thanks for letting us know. That program is very neat and straightforward - many folk use it around these parts.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
